Renew Focus on Growth to Ensure Future of Box Lacrosse
A few weeks back I described that the game of box lacrosse is on the decline in Canada. In this report, I am attempting to offer suggestions toward how we can supplement the efforts to grow our sport of lacrosse in Canada so it can maintain a healthy heartbeat. I’ve had multiple discussions with concerned people who are noticing the issues facing down lacrosse in Canada since writing the last piece. In our last article I told you of a 10%-20% drop in participation in summer box lacrosse in Canada in one year from 2015 to 2016. Doing the math, at...
State of Box Lacrosse in Canada, Part 1
I’ve been part of ongoing hot stove conversations over the last few years about the state of the box lacrosse game here in Canada. From East to West, I have watched and listened to the stories of who is doing what. Locally, I invested in my son’s world of entry level lacrosse the past three years while helping out at the Jr. A level those same three seasons. This poster ad for Canadian Tire has its demographic on target, so why can't lacrosse? I have written a few stories in the trenches about my experiences and here again I will subject you...
Size or Skill?
Goalies are settling in for another year of summer box lacrosse. That means the on-going challenges of improving (at any age) the way you play the sport physically and MENTALLY has arrived and a new year of learning is upon you. I spend time working with lots of goalies over a range of ages. I try to get them to consider options to the way they are currently playing just to push their growth and step out of that mindset of absolutes most goalies are hanging their hat on. Over on the Box Goalie’s Universe on Facebook I saw a...
The Misunderstood Position of Box Lacrosse Goaltending
The position of the Indoor lacrosse goaltender has always been a tough proposition when looking at it from any side of the fence. How many people have ever played the position long enough to have a well developed perspective? Players, parents, coaches or even equipment managers are all working with incomplete degrees of understanding of the Box goalie job description. Most of them have no experience and apply their best guess as input but are armed with poor ideas of what it entails to be a goalie in Box Lacrosse. When trying to teach the goalie skills required to build...
When it Comes to Concussions, Everyone has a Roll
This past weekend I caught a commercial for a new Christmas holiday movie Concussion. The whole world is being made aware of the issues with head injuries from sports to re-evaluate their own risk. The impending storm the NHL is facing looks grim. Without question, it will land it right where the NFL is, in the midst of a major lawsuit. The NLL need not worry about this right now. I do suspect in a few years there will be ex-players recounting their time in lacrosse while dealing with some symptoms of post traumatic head injury. It’s inevitable. All of...
